Over the weekend Watford beat Liverpool 3-0 in the Premier League. It lifted them out of the relegation places, to the undoubted delight of their fans. Liverpool remain 22 points clear at the top of the table, still on course for their first league title for 30 years. In a preview on Saturday one of… Continue reading Word of the week: Invincible
For over two months now, since mid-December, a pattern has emerged in the Championship, the second tier of English football. In general, the team starting the weekend in third place has been unable to win. There have been two exceptions to this, but the trend has been pronounced enough for commentators to call it a… Continue reading The curse of third place
Another month begins, and once again Leeds United are top of the Championship, the second tier of English football. For the seventh month in a row on this Blog, here is a screenshot taken from the BBC website to confirm this. As noted often on these pages I have followed the team since childhood. I… Continue reading Turning points
Leeds United begin the 2020s top of the league. The league in this case is the Championship, the second tier of English football. Here, for the sixth month in a row on this Blog, is a screenshot taken from the BBC website confirming the current state of things. As you can see, Leeds are ahead… Continue reading Leeds United, top of the table for the fourth decade in a row
On Boxing Day 2016 my brother and I went on a local pub crawl. It was something we had talked about doing when we were teenagers, but never got around to it. You can read about it here. On Boxing Day 2017 we went on another crawl (as noted in this piece), but we didn’t… Continue reading The Brentford FC pub crawl, postponed
Every now and then on this Blog I reflect on subscriptions, most recently in this piece about Netflix (June 2019). As predicted, at the end of our free trial month we continued to subscribe to the service, and still do. Unlike some of the services that I have subscribed to, for month after month without… Continue reading Word of the week: Prime
Here, for the fifth successive month on this Blog, is a screenshot from the BBC website showing Leeds United at the top of the Championship, the second tier of English football. As mentioned in many earlier pieces, like this one from November, I have followed Leeds since childhood, and I have timed these regular posts… Continue reading This month’s screenshot showing Leeds United top of the Championship
We are a few weeks away from the end of the current decade, the least successful of my lifetime for three different teams, playing three different sports, in three different countries. From at least the 1940s onwards, Cork (hurling, Ireland), the New York Yankees (baseball, USA) and Tottenham Hotspur (football, England) had won at least… Continue reading Unsuccessful sporting decades (Cork hurling, Yankees baseball, Spurs football)
Here, for the fourth successive month, is a screenshot taken from the BBC website that shows the top of the Championship, the second tier of English football. Like its three predecessors, beginning with this piece in August, it shows Leeds United (the team that I have followed since childhood) top of the table. Leeds spent… Continue reading “If I were a betting man …”
Last Saturday Leeds United played at Millwall, 10 miles as the crow flies from my home here in West London. As I have noted many times on this Blog, I have followed Leeds since childhood, but I was not at the game. Millwall won 2-1, aided by a refereeing decision which saw them awarded a… Continue reading Watching Leeds at Millwall
