Stuck at 2: the 2000s
The table below lists every song that reached #2 in the UK charts during the 2000s (i.e. the decade from January 2000 to December 2009), but did not make it to the top. When a single was kept off #1 by more than one song, each one is listed, along with how many weeks it kept its rival at #2.
When a song was kept off the top by the same #1 for non-consecutive weeks each separate run at #2 is listed separately. For example, Kate Nash, Foundations, was kept at #2 by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z, Umbrella, for 2 weeks in July 2007, then Fergie, Big Girls Don’t Cry, was at #2 for 1 week, and then Kate Nash, Foundations, returned to #2 for another week. When Umbrella was replaced at #1 by Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson & DOE, The Way I Are, Kate Nash, Foundations, remained at #2 for a further 2 weeks.
In the first months of 2005 every #1 by Elvis Presley was re-released as a single. In the list below these reissues are treated as new releases, so although songs like Good Luck Charm and Crying in the Chapel had made it to #1 when originally released (in 1962 and 1965 respectively) they are recorded as “Stuck at 2” here.
