This Blog is not a place for up-to-the-minute news analysis. There is a category called “In the news” and browsing through articles that have been categorized that way you will find more mentions of recently deceased sportsmen and pop stars than, say, current political developments.
When this Blog began, in late 2015, the UK prime minister was David Cameron. He was replaced in 2016 by Theresa May. I see that all of my references to the latter have been in pieces categorized as “Trivia“, most frequently in pieces about the ITV quiz show “Tenable” such as this one. Boris Johnson replaced her as PM in 2019, and yesterday he announced his resignation. In a few weeks’ time the UK will get its fourth prime minister in a little over six years. Strong and stable government anyone?
I’ll leave it to today’s Daily Record to summarize the outgoing prime minister’s achievements, as shown on its front page (image copied from the Guardian website, here).
In case the print is a little too small to read, the piece by Paul Hutcheon begins:
Serial liar Boris Johnson was finally forced to face the truth yesterday and resigned as Prime Minister.
In a speech outside No10, he tried to claim his dismal tenure was a roaring success, when in reality it was 1077 days of scandals and attempted cover-ups.
People of my generation will remember the scene in Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” when a crowd of rebels answers the question “What have the Romans ever done for us?” The answers (also listed in this “Tenable” piece) were: Aqueduct, Sanitation, Roads, Irrigation, Medicine, Education, Wine, Public baths, Public order, Brought peace.
What will Boris Johnson be remembered for? In the words of the paper that calls itself “Scotland’s Champion”: “Partygate, Chris Pincher, Dominic Cummings, Joking about Miners, Care Home Deaths, £112k Wallpaper, Flouting Face Mask Rules, Jennifer Arcuri, Sky-High Taxes, Inflation, Betraying Northern Ireland, Afghan Evacuation Shambles, Privatising Channel 4, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, Starmer Savile Slander, Lie After Lie After Lie”.
What the Daily Record said.
