An update about readers in faraway places (Angola, Cuba, Sudan …)

In September 2019, in this piece about readers in distant places, I noted that this Blog has attracted at least one visitor from 38 of the 40 most populous nations on earth. The exceptions were Iran and Sudan (18th and 34th respectively in the list of countries by population). I wrote, “If either country does appear in my list of Views and Visitors, I’ll let you know.” I can report that at some point in the last year at least one person from Sudan has chanced upon this site. In addition, people in Angola, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mali, Bolivia and Cuba have all paid a visit. There had been no traffic from any of those countries before September 2019.

Iran remains as the most populous country with no registered visits to these pages. The next most populous is Yemen (49th in the list). For the record, and because I have once again been playing around with these numbers in a spreadsheet, here is a table listing the 21 nations with a population greater than 5.9 million that have no registered views to this site. Their rank and population sizes are from the same May 2019 data-set that I was using last year and have not changed dramatically since then.

If your knowledge of world geography is up to it, you might be able to match up the countries in the table above with the blank areas in the map below. It shows, in varying shades of pink and red, the countries that have registered views to this site. The UK is the only one in red, as over 90% of views come from here.

Countries and Views to September 2020

My knowledge of world geography is not great but I note the following significant blank areas, reading from left to right: Suriname and Paraguay in Latin America; a sizable chunk of central and west Africa (including the Central African Republic); three of the five countries that border the Caspian Sea (Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran); Mongolia; Papua New Guinea. The largest single area that was blank a year ago but has since been filled in is Greenland, which WordPress counts separately from the rest of Denmark. It has registered exactly one Page View in the last year. My thanks to that one hardy soul for stopping by, and to you, wherever you are.

UPDATE, 1 February 2021: Yesterday (Sunday 31 January 2021) I had my first Page Views registered in Syria. In the months since this piece was first published I have also had Page Views registered in Malawi, Senegal and Azerbaijan. These four countries have a combined population of over 60 million.
