Pop Master questions, week ending 17 April 2020

For the third weekend in a row, here are the questions and answers from the BBC Radio 2 mid-morning quiz Pop Master for the week just ended. There are 10 rounds of 10 questions, for the five days up to Friday 17 April 2020.

On the radio, each Bonus Question features a brief clip from a hit song. In most cases you need to hear the clip to get the answer, but sometimes there is enough information in the clue to help you. In some cases below, in transcribing the Bonus Questions, I have included hints to make up for the fact that you can’t hear the musical clip.

Of course, reading the questions here is no substitute for hearing them read out by Ken Bruce. This link will take you to the episodes of his show available on the BBC Sounds App, going back for the last 31 days. Pop Master begins around 60 minutes into each show.

Questions and answers from previous weeks:

Week ending 3 April 2020;

Week ending 10 April 2020.

BONUS: Although they achieved several chart entries in the 1980s this was the first Top 40 hit achieved by this group in the 90s; who are they? [The lyrics include: I’ve been looking so long at these / Pictures of You / that I almost believe that they’re real] (The Cure)

Which female group had hits in the first half of the 70s with Third Finger Left Hand, You came you saw you conquered and Guilty? (THE PEARLS)

[Nope, just like Round 1 it was the last question that caught me out: Third Finger Left Hand got to #31 in 1972, You came you saw you conquered got to #32 also in 1972 and Guilty reached #10 in 1974]

36 for him and 36 for me, we both missed out on The Pearls, that last question

3 in 10: Guns ‘n Roses, yes for me, really close for him – he got two (“Sweet Child of Mine” and “Live and Let Die”) and said “September Rain” instead of “November Rain”; that’s a shame – he would have made it to Champions League Pop Master but he was “two months out”

Guns ‘n Roses (16 April 2020): Sweet Child o’ Mine / Paradise City / Patience / Knockin’ on heaven’s door / Live and let die / November Rain / Since I don’t have you / Live and Let Die / Welcome to the Jungle

The songs It Don’t Come Easy in 1971 and Only You in 1974 were the first and last of 5 Top 40 hits by which chart artist as a solo act? (Ringo Starr)

In which year did these three songs all reach #1? The Fear Lily Allen, My Life Would Suck Without You Kelly Clarkson, Fight for this Love Cheryl Cole (2009)

BONUS: Here’s one of 2 #1 hits by the New Seekers in the 1970s; please name the other one [The lyrics include the song’s title: You won’t find another fool like me] (I’d like to teach the world to sing)

The song Wishing if I had a photograph of you was one of 4 Top 40 singles by A Flock of Seagulls in the 1980s; name one of the other three (SPACE AGE LOVE SONG) Transfer Affection, The more you live the more you love

[NOPE, tough question this; Space Age Love Song made it to #34 in 1982, Transfer Affection was #38 in 1983 and The more you live the more you love got to #26 in 1984, so not even a Top 20 among these songs from over 35 years ago]

A reissue of the mid-60s song My Girl became a Top 3 hit for which Motown group in 1992? (Temptations)

BONUS: In 2001 this successful group of the 80s and 90s achieved their first hit of the 21st century with this; can you identify them [We’re like crystal / We break easy / I’m a boy / If you need me] (New Order)

Both the 1975 and 1976 studio albums by Queen had the same titles as films by the Marx Brothers; name either of these albums (A Night at the Opera) A Day at the Races

21 for her, 36 for me, let down by not knowing the names of songs by A Flock of Seagulls that didn’t even make the Top 20

In which year did these three songs all reach #1? Turn Back Time Aqua, Millennium Robbie Williams, To You I Belong B*witched (1998)

BONUS: Here’s a verse from the only hit single by Jim Gilstrap in 1975; can you give the title? [The lyrics include: Show you a good time / But now the piper must paid / And I’m afraid I’m just about to lose my mind] (Swing Your Daddy)

What is the name of the chart act that had a top 5 single in the early 70s with the song Softly Whispering I Love You? (THE CONGREGATION)

22 for him, 36 for me, and for at least the third time this week the final question has cost me a full house

3 in 10: Sheryl Crow, not for him or me (I chose the wrong James Bond theme, despite all my James Bond prep)

Sheryl Crow (17 April 2020): All I want to do / Sweet Child of Mine / If it makes you happy / Tomorrow Never Dies / My favourite mistake

My scores, and the questions I got wrong

Tough questions this week, or else I’m getting worse at Pop Master.

Last month, in this piece, I noted that in the week ending Friday 13 March I managed to achieve the top score of 39 points 6 times out of 10. Last week I didn’t manage a single score of 39. This is only the second time in the last three years when I have failed to do so during a whole week’s worth of questions. (The other time was week ending 17 August 2018.) On each of the last four rounds (both sets of questions, on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April) I managed scores of 36 but on every occasion there was a single question that caught me out. Between them The Thompson Twins (with Grace Jones on backing vocals), The Pearls, A Flock of Seagulls and The Congregation stopped me from getting at least one full house
