General observations

Final Rounds (Jackpot Rounds)

These are the rounds that interest me most. No matter how well teams perform in the earlier rounds, they have to name all 10 items in their Jackpot Round to win the money.

I could complete two of the five Jackpot Round lists, my worst performance of the season so far, and both of them were alphabetical and based on regular quiz question topics: the last 10 US States alphabetically and the 10 countries that come between Haiti and Jamaica alphabetically.

Questions about the board game Cluedo come up fairly regularly (though not as often as questions about Monopoly) and although I played it often enough as a child I couldn’t remember all 10 items containing the letter L. I follow the Champions League most seasons but the group stages in recent years kind of merge into each other. The answers to the question about the Italian, Spanish and German teams in the 2017/18 season included a team that I have no recollection of. And there’s no way I could have guessed the 10 items on the Personal Information page of a UK Passport.

Questions that brought a smile to my face

Nice questions about sport and the Periodic Table this week: the 10 Premier League clubs with most consecutive seasons, the 10 football teams in the M25 area in the top two tiers, and the 10 most used capital letters in chemical symbols all made me smile.

Questions where I had a chance of getting all 10

The three questions mentioned in the last section gave me a fighting chance of getting all 10: Premier League clubs with most consecutive seasons, London teams, and most used capital letters in chemical symbols.

The keyboard question was a doddle for me (“The 10 letters on the middle and bottom rows on the left-hand side of a standard keyboard”), even without looking at my computer.

Thursday’s episode had three rounds before the Jackpot Round where I got all 10 answers, which has never happened before: the first 10 kings after 1066, the 10 singles by Wham! to reach the top 10 and the 10 US States beginning with N or T. Unfortunately, Thursday’s Jackpot Round stumped me, so I wouldn’t have won any money if I’d been playing for real.

Questions where I didn’t have a chance of getting near 10

As in previous weeks, questions about Film & TV and pop music stumped me: 2018 Oscar winners (6/10), the last 10 Tom Cruise movies (2/10), Chart acts with most weeks in the album Top 10 (2/10 before going wrong). I didn’t have a chance with anything related to food and drink (Tropicana fruit juices, Jamie Oliver’s mulled wine recipe, Tesco beans) or animals (the first 10 breeds of hound alphabetically).

How the teams fared

Here’s a list of how each team performed in their jackpot rounds: how many team members made it to the final round, how much they were playing for and whether they won the prize fund.

Note: where a team did not get all 10 answers in the final round, the answers that caught them out are listed here as well.

Monday 1 October 2018

2 of the Eager Beaverstocks made it to the final and won 2.5k by naming the last 10 US States alphabetically.

Tuesday 2 October 2018

All 5 of the Brainy Bunch made it to the final, playing for 17k, and named 9 of the 10 Cluedo weapons, rooms or suspects containing the letter L. [The remaining answer: Billiard Room.]

3 from the Yummy Brummies made it to the final, playing for 15k, and named 7 of the 2017/18 Champions League teams from Spain, Italy or Germany. [The remaining answers: Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Sevilla.]

Friday 5 October 2018

2 from Leaves on the Line made it to the final, playing for 25k, and named 7 of the 10 pieces of written information on a passport. [The remaining answers: Nationality, Authority, Holder’s signature.]
