Here’s a list of the songs that I performed in public for the first time during June 2024. Each month I aim to play at least one new song from each of the following repertoires:
- Songs that reached #1 in the UK.
- Songs that reached #1 somewhere else.
- Songs that have not reached #1 anywhere.
Songs that reached #1 in the UK
| Date | Song (Artist, Year it reached #1) | Notes |
| Tue 18-Jun-2024 | Amazing Grace (Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 1972) | The UK’s best-selling record of 1972, played on bagpipes by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. No bagpipes for me, just guitar and vocals. I have sung this song dozens of times at church services, but this was the first time I played it in a pub, on guitar |
| Thu 27-Jun-2024 | Can’t Buy Me Love (Beatles, 1964) | The UK’s best-selling record of 1964, and my earliest musical memory |
Songs that reached #1 somewhere else
| Date | Song (Artist, Year it reached #1) | Notes |
| Thu 6-Jun-2024 | Garden Party (Rick Nelson, 1972) | #1 in Canada. I heard someone perform this a while back and decided to add it to my repertoire. My mother loved this song. Unlike many of her favourites we didn’t have the single, and it wasn’t a Top 40 hit in the UK, so listening to Rick Nelson’s recording really took me back, to breakfast time in my childhood. “You can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself” |
| Tue 18-Jun-2024 | Children of the Revolution (T Rex, 1972) | #1 in Ireland. I need more T Rex in my repertoire |
Songs that have not reached #1 anywhere
| Date | Song (Artist, Year it reached #1) | Notes |
| Thu 6-Jun-2024 | Touch the Hem of His Garment (Sam Cooke, n/a) | My reasons for learning this song are in this piece |
| Tue 18-Jun-2024 | Oh Carol (Neil Sedaka, n/a) | Neil Sedaka is another artist and songwriter I should feature more in my repertoire. I thought that this had made it to #1 in the US or Canada, but it didn’t |
