9 thoughts on ““Tenable” questions, week ending 10 January 2020 (Series 4, Episodes 31-35)

    1. Those are the answers given on the show.
My search on Chambers (https://chambers.co.uk/search/?query=abash&title=21st) gives the following response:
“No exact matches for abash, but the following may be helpful.
abashed adj embarrassed or disconcerted, especially because of shyness.
ETYMOLOGY: 14c as abayste: from French esbahir to astound.”
So I guess Chambers Online doesn’t treat “abash” as a word even if other dictionaries or sites (like Collins, Merriam-Webster and dictionary.com) do.

  1. The question on vegetables on hienz soups they gave the answer tomato but tomato is a fruit not a vegetable so that was a wrong answer so shouldn’t have been allowed

  2. I think that the question setter(s) covered pretty much every angle on this one.
In the clarification, or “small print”, that Warwick Davis reads out at the start of the question, quoted above, it says:
“…”vegetable” refers to ingredients that may be described as pulses, seeds, fungi or herbs, as well as other plants usually sold in the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket”.
So that covers all of the following, which are not, technically, vegetables: Basil and Coriander (herbs), Lentils and Peas (legumes, which are plants that produce seeds or pods), Mushrooms (fungi), as well as Tomatoes (fruit).

  3. As with other quiz shows, “Tenable” uses the word “country” to mean “a sovereign state that is a member of the United Nations in its own right”. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are not sovereign states, they are part of the United Kingdom, so Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast do not count as capital cities.
