This piece, from 6 months ago, recalls something my father taught us when we were children. It compared contours on Ordnance Survey-style maps (which show how steep a gradient is) with the rings left behind when someone is drinking a pint of stout. It also describes the method my brother and I use to fold empty crisp packets so that they take up less table space.
That earlier piece, like most of the posts on this Blog, was all text. This site is pretty light on pictures. In the last 6 months I have started taking photos of what remains after a pint of stout and a packet of crisps have been dealt with. In most cases these photos were taken on trips to the pub with my 14-year-old son (who, as reported many times on these pages, loves going to the pub), so there are glasses of soft drinks in many of the pictures too. Our trips to the pub have been far less frequent in recent months than they were two years ago, when I reported regularly about visiting every pub in my postcode.
Here are the photos, with the date, pub (and location), and what was in the glass to begin with.

Wow, that’s a memory for me. Chiswick and Ealing – they were a big part of my life.
(Just) before moving to London to study I invented a “Crown and Anchor” dice game, I’m sure I used to pass that pub regularly. If it still trades, I will have to find it on googlemaps. Even if it’s no longer there, I’m sure I can still find the address and see if it was on my routes through Chiswick.
I have a 4-circle challenge for the teens I tutor at maths, will have to tidy up the image and condense the challenge to fit on the image. I guess comments on wordpress don’t allow images (as Quora and Stackexchange do) do they?
I will have to post a link to it on an image hosting site if not.
Oh and Kilkenny too : we started our Trans-Southern-Eire cycle tour there – didn’t see much of the town though as we caught the morning flight from LHR to DUB then a bus out to Kilkenny with our bikes in boxes, had to assemble them at the bus depot and bike down to Waterford on that first day. What a blast that holiday was.
Kilkenny, Tramore, Dungarvan, Cashel, Shannon, Lisamore
Then a coach back from Lisamore to Dublin to fly back.
I have this funny feeling the London Underground did not accept our bikes on the Picadilly Line as they were not in boxes anymore, so had to re-assemble them on the airport concourse and cycle back to Chiswick late on a Sunday, on an unknown route without the A/Z of London to help.
The adventurousness of youth. When we next went back we hired a car, and did the same rough southerly semicircle but different towns and cities – and you know what, the memories of the cycle holiday embedded much better.
